Spotlight on Service Spring 2025 May/June:
Cherilyn Cecil
Service Industry Experience: 10 years
Assistant Bar Manager, Bartender, & Barista Currents: Restless Spirits & Rochester Brewing
Did you do something before full time in SI?
” I have been all around the place career-wise. In recent years, I was a first responder, but I decided to leave my EMS job to pursue more fulfilling work. I also went to art school after graduating from high school. While I was in college, I discovered bartending and serving that helped me along the way. “
Do you miss where you worked before?
“Sometimes, I miss EMS. I miss saving lives and making a difference in someone’s health. However, I am mentally much better working during the day, helping customers enjoy their time, and overall spending time talking about anything and everything.”
What has “kept” you in the service industry?
“My knack for creating a positive experience, the money can be pretty awesome sometimes. Hours are better, I feel like I can go on vacation without having to use PTO. Managers make a huge impact on your work health. My current managers see my value and celebrate it. I’m very lucky, because I do know the flip side of that as well.”
What is a favorite customer interaction you have experienced from behind the bar?
” I think my favorite interactions all have one thing in common– creating an experience that is unlike any other. I really try my best to personalize every experience. I try to have the customer pick a base liquor, and then I create. It is so exceptionally important to me to crack the code of a customer’s pallet. Once I get a feel of what the customer could enjoy, that’s when the work begins.”
Without naming names, What is a moment of “worst” customer interaction you have experienced?
” Being a woman behind the bar can be a daunting job, in itself. I’ve had people ask me where I live. I’ve been trapped and touched inappropriately by people I don’t know. Consent is so important. People forget that their words/actions may cause others to feel uncomfortable. I just want to have a good time, man. Don’t touch me if I don’t know you, without my consent. It’s 2025, we have to get better as a society teaching others about this. “
What are some bartending ‘Pet Peeves” both, a customer and coworker? (Not directed at anyone in particular, and can be from any time period in your experience. )
” I’m typically a pretty easy-going person and work well with many types of personalities. With that being said, I really dislike when someone is a weak communicator. Communication is a huge part of being a team, especially when you’re in the weeds. Also dislike when co-workers don’t pay attention to the details. When I have to constantly check someone’s work for a quality product, that’s not a fun time for me. I’d rather someone ask questions, than the customer be served something they didn’t order/can’t have. “
What is a pet peeve from a customer?
” I’m going to start off with a word of advice to customers out there– Know your establishment! I don’t work at a club, (no shade at all, I just prefer a quieter environment) so when someone comes up to the bar and is like: “What’s your best shot?” Girl, I don’t know– we are a distillery, not a shot bar; Best I can do is a shot of whiskey. Or when someone won’t look at a menu and just says “I want a bud light”. C’mon now. Look at the menu like a reasonable person, and you can always ask after viewing if there are other items not listed on the menu.
When I say, “Hey how are you today?” and the customer responds with, “Diet coke”. First of all, I am a person. Even if you’re having a bad day, there’s no excuse for dismissing me. You never know when someone or something could turn your day around. “
If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?
” I would be an artist of some kind. “
Last question, for fun. What is your favorite intrusive thought you have had for a customer?
” If a customer is exceptionally rude or mean to me, I dont make their drink as top-notch as I do for others that are respectful. Less alcohol, if you’re drunk, more ice than drink, etc. BE KIND to your service staff!!! “
